Car buyers often focus on haggling down a dealer’s offer toward invoice price. That’s OK, but often that’s not where the real money is, says a former car dealer in his new book.

Instead of the purchase price, consumers should focus on other components of the deal, especially loans, trade-ins and their desire to buy more car than they can afford, said Mark Ragsdale, author of “Car Wreck: How You Got Rear-Ended, Run Over & Crushed by the U.S. Auto Industry.”

“You’d be better off paying MSRP and paying attention to the big stuff,” Ragsdale said. “But dealer profitability gets the lion’s share of consumer focus and attention.”

Here, Ragsdale said, are a few things to consider other than price:

That upside-down feeling: Negative equity is when you owe more on your car than it’s worth.

This is true of most who drive a financed new car off the lot. The vehicle can lose a quarter of its value as soon as the rear wheels hit the street.

But even many people who have owned their cars for years are upside-down. It’s typical to own a car three or four years before your car is worth what you owe on it.

This depreciation snowballs as consumers get car fever before they have equity in their vehicle. Dealers and auto lenders can accommodate these people by essentially rolling that negative equity into their next car loan — often keeping the payments reasonable by extending the loan.

Customers trade in their cars every 39 months on average, but finance them for an average of 64 months, Ragsdale said. That leaves many upside-down by an average of $4,700, online auto site Edmunds.com said. The lesson? Don’t buy a new vehicle until you pay off your current one.

Trade-in value: Many factors affect trade-in value, including a massive recall such as the one Toyota is experiencing.

New-vehicle sales dropped to their lowest point in decades last month, but a weak economy wasn’t the only culprit.

“I think it had to do with the weather,” said Shorty Navarro, who owns the Stadium dealerships in Boardman and Salem. “I don’t ever remember that much snow.”

Sales have been slumping since the nation’s credit and stock markets collapsed in 2008, but they reached a new low in February.

Last month was the snowiest February on record in the Mahoning Valley, with 36.3 inches recorded at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

Dealers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties sold 969 new vehicles last month, which was 4 percent below the number sold in February 2009.

It also was just under the 972 that were sold in November 2009.

That month was the first time that Steve Chos, executive vice president of the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio, could recall that monthly sales dipped under 1,000.

He has been with the association for 20 years.

Comparisons that go back farther than three years are difficult because the association changed reporting services that calculate the totals, but February clearly was one of the worst sales months in a long time.

“It was the longest short month that I could ever remember. We had several blankets of snow that slowed everything,” Chos said.

Navarro said he expects improved results this month. After all, the sun was out for several days last week, and temperatures have gone up.

“Everybody has had a good start. Looks like we’ll have a good month,” Navarro said.

For the first two months, local dealers sold 2,210 new vehicles, which was down 10 percent from the pace set in 2009.

Used-vehicle sales were not strong in February, either.

Some manufacturers such as Renault are still showing concept electric cars but the main message from chief executives in Geneva is that full-electric cars are no longer a pipe dream, but are coming to the market.

Perhaps the most ambitious of all is a relative laggard at the moment: Volkswagen. At a glamorous event with Justin Timberlake no less (not singing though, fortunately or not, depending on your taste), Martin Winterkorn, VW’s ultra-Teutonic chief executive, unveiled plans for the German group to become the leading electric carmaker in the world by 2018. By my reckoning, he estimates VW will sell about 240,000 electric cars by then. The big news is that VW cheap domestic flights from Lord Howe Island to Melbourne (All Airports) will make an electric version of its best-selling Golf hatchback.

United Bank of India said it will raise between Rs 330 croreand Rs 350 crore from its initial public offering. The IPO will open on February 23. Through the IPO, the Government will dilute 15.8 per cent stake in the bank and will hold 82.2 per cent post the issue. The indicative price band for the IPO is between Rs 60-66 a share. The issue will close on February 25 and the shares will be listed on both the BSE and NSE.

Tata Steel’s consolidated financial performance for the third quarter of this fiscal was impacted by the poor performance of its European arm Corus. Corus recorded a 36 per cent drop in turnover at Rs 16,755 crore as deliveries fell 13 per cent. The consolidated profits of Tata Steel were down 42 per cent at Rs 473 crore. Sales too declined by 20% to Rs 26,069 crore in the third quarter of fiscal year 2010 from Rs 32,515 crore in same quarter of 2009.

Tata Motors has appointed Mr Carl-Peter Forster as the group Chief Executive Officer. According to a press release, he will have the overall responsibility of operations globally, including Jaguar Land Rover, whose CEO, Mr David Smith, quit recently. Mr Forster has 24 years of experience in the automobile industry. His last assignment was as head of General Motors, Europe, where he looked after Opel/Vauxhall, Saab and the European activities of Chevrolet.

Bharti Airtel on Tuesday said that acquisition of Zain Group’s African assets would result in a total payout of $9 billion, which includes any loans payable by the operating companies to Zain Group. Out of this, $700 million would be paid by Bharti after one year of closing the deal. Explosives specialists who disarm the roadside bombs of Iraq and Afghanistan say the mental zone they enter to defeat these devices is like a narcotic. They describe a state of heightened senses that comes only from death being just a detonating click away.

So it rings true, they say, when the words “war is a drug” flash on screen in the Academy Award-nominated Iraq war movie, The Hurt Locker.

“When you put on the bomb suit, your life’s really simple — don’t die,” says Army Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Graham, 33, an explosive ordnance disposal, or EOD, specialist who has done three tours of combat in Iraq and disarmed more bombs than he can remember.

“Your sense of awareness of what’s going on around you, and how clearly you focus on something is pretty extraordinary,” Graham says. “That’s what’s addictive.”

This war-is-drug premise animates the film’s lead character, an EOD team leader who finds meaning only in the mission he loves: defeating bombs that can kill him in an instant. It is part of what movie reviewers have said makes The Hurt Locker a tour de force as a contemporary vision of combat.

Not so fast, say those who know about the fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They may turn out for the movie in droves — PX’s around the world, including war zones, report the video selling out — and the adrenaline rush of combat may indeed be addicting.

But filmmakers took enough liberties with war reality to cause those who know better to either grin and bear it or dismiss the movie altogether.
